Job Description
A Public Works / Maintenance Worker is responsible for the operation of construction and
maintenance of all equipment, performing activities as needed and/or required by the Borough Council.
The position requires the safe operation and maintenance of Borough-owned equipment and power tools, such as lawn tractors, mowers, water equipment, chain saws, snow blower, etc., as required to properly maintain Borough roads, grounds and water system, and to perform other job related duties as required.
Typical Job Duties:
1. Maintenance
2. Building and water repair/maintenance
3. Equipment repair/maintenance
4. Administration (Meetings, Recordkeeping, Calls)
5. Mowing/weeding/landscaping
6. Line painting
7. Streets (sweeping, pot holes, graveling)
8. Sign repair
9. Traffic control/barricades
10. Inspections
11. Monitor water system and usage using mobile app
12. Garbage collection in parks
13. Leaf & vegetation collection (coordinate clean ups)
14. Storm drain and culvert clean out
15. Cemetery maintenance
16. Snow Removal (shoveling/applying ice melt)
17. Flush fire hydrants
18. Work water valves
19. Water meter readings
20. Check chlorine levels weekly (2 locations)
21. Assist in emergency water situations
22. Oversee water repairs (when necessary)
Requirements for the Position of Public Works Laborer:
A valid high school diploma and Pennsylvania State driver’s license is required as well as
knowledge, mechanical skills and ability to operate Borough owned equipment. The ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions in English and work independently is required. Computer literacy is desired. Attendance at government required classes may be required. Flagger training and certification will be required. Additional training to maintain the borough water system will be required.
The candidate will be required to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting heavy objects and working in all type of weather conditions. Safety procedures and practices are required, as well as wearing safety equipment. A good working relationship with co-workers and the general public is a necessity. The candidate must be able to respond quickly for emergencies such as snowfall, water repairs, floods, downed trees, etc. and must be knowledgeable in a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks.
